Culture in iraq
Introduction:
Modern day Iraq covers much of what used to be considered the Fertile Crescent. Almost all Iraqi's acknowledge Arabic as the national language. There are currently 35 million people living in Iraq and Islam is the predominant religion of the country with two sections: Sunni and Shiite.
Brief History:
The area of Mesopotamia has been under the influence of many civilizations. These influences include the Sumerians, Mongols, and Ottoman Turks. In 1932, the Iraqi people gained their independence, but were still under British imperial rule. In 1958, the monarchy was overthrown and ambitious developments were beginning in the 1970s and a powerful army was formed. Saddam Hussein eventually went on to take over the Ba'th Party and led the nation into two wars that helped to isolate the country. It wasn't until 2003 that the regime under Saddam Hussein was taken down. Currently, the UN is taking notice to the deterioration of Iraq and there are more than 1.5 million displaced Iraqis. There are 12 sites that are assisting approximately 140,000 people, but because of the unrest within the country this number could rise dramatically.
Flag, Clothes, and more:
A traditional meal in Iraq would consist of rice or soup with lamb and vegetables. The flag holds important meaning to the people of Iraq. The flag has a white band with three green five-pointed stars. During the Persian Gulf War in 1991, the phrase Allahu Akbar (God is great) was added to the flag. The flag resembles other Arab countries' flags and demonstrates Iraqi faith in Allah and Arab unity.
